After days of criticism surrounding England’s poor weather conditions, the host country needed some positives to come from the matches to follow. The English cricket team must have felt some of the heat aimed at their country by spectators and fans all around the globe. They came in determined, and that was evident from their display on the field.
West Indies were in need of a much awaited victory. However, having been put to bat by England, they never looked confident. They kept losing wickets with consistency. Nicholas Pooran tried to play a solid innings but his 63 could only help the Windies reach a total of 212. England’s bowling attack proved to be too good for them.
England came out with a rather unusual batting approach. Joe Root and Jonny Bairstrow took the fight to the West Indian bowlers right away. Joe Root went on to score an unbeaten 100, while Chris Woakes and Ben Stokes were given the chance to come up the order and bat the way they want.
England chased the total with such an ease that is reminiscent of a nimble handed magician doing card tricks. They won the match with 8 wickets to spare. Root came away with the man of the match award for his brilliant century and also a 5 over bowling cameo where he took 2 wickets.
Joe Root has risen to the top of the runs list with 279 to his name. England are now at 2nd position in the group table while West Indies are at 6th. These 2 teams will approach the upcoming games with completely different mind-set. One team with all the confidence in the world while the other with lots to prove.
